Construction site information for weeks 7–8
Piling and blasting works at the Kaskia Wellbeing Block have been delayed due to cold winter weather. Blasting in the underground parking facility and in the former hospital building is planned to continue in week 7, weather conditions permitting. Approximately 80% of the blasting work has already been completed.
- The blasting work is planned in two-week cycles during the spring: two weeks of preparations followed by a few days of blasting, says Matti Koivu, Site Manager at the main contractor Lujatalo.
Sewer excavation works on Sirkkalankatu have been postponed until spring.
Demolition and reconstruction works
Demolition works are ongoing in parallel with reconstruction in both the former hospital building and the Tower Building. The demolition phase is extensive and technically demanding, as the buildings undergo a complete refurbishment before reconstruction begins.
- In practice, only the façades will remain, Koivu notes.
Construction supervision
The construction site and works are continuously monitored by various experts. The City of Turku’s Building Control Authority also supervises the project and carries out regular site inspections.
A good deed
This week the foundations, Stiftelsen Eschnerska Frilasarettet and Kommunalrådet C.G. Sundells stiftelse donated the former hospital’s emergency power plant to Ukraine.
